2 Days Trip – Jebel Shams, Nizwa & Desert Experience

Your adventure kicks off bright and early with a pickup from your hotel in Muscat. Once you're settled into the comfortable 4×4, your guide will head toward Oman's fascinating interior. The drive itself is a treat winding mountain roads, quiet villages, and landscapes that gradually shift from urban to ancient.

Nizwa is one of those places that immediately pulls you into another era. As one of the most visited tourist places in Nizwa, the iconic Nizwa Fort stands tall as a symbol of Omani heritage and military ingenuity. Built in the 17th century, its massive round tower, one of the largest in the Arabian Peninsula, offers panoramic views of the city and surrounding date palm groves. 

Just steps from the fort lies the Nizwa Souq, one of the most authentic traditional markets in all of Oman. This is where things to do in Nizwa get delightfully sensory. Stalls overflow with golden dates, aromatic spices, hand-beaten silverware, khanjar daggers, and locally made handicrafts.

Take your time here. Sip on fresh juice, chat with the vendors, and pick up a souvenir or two. The souq is especially lively on Friday mornings when a traditional cattle and goat market takes place nearby a true slice of Omani rural life.

After an optional lunch at a local restaurant (not included), you'll begin the ascent to Jebel Shams the highlight of the entire trip. As Oman's highest peak, Jebel Shams sits at over 3,000 metres above sea level, and the drive up is nothing short of spectacular.

The road curves through rugged mountain passes, past abandoned stone villages clinging to cliffs, and offers viewpoints that will genuinely make you catch your breath. The Jebel Shams temperature today and throughout the cooler months (October to April) can drop significantly, so layering up is a smart idea.

When people talk about the Grand Canyon of Oman, they mean the dramatic gorge of Wadi Ghul, visible from the viewpoints near Jebel Shams. The canyon drops nearly 1,000 metres straight down, and standing at the edge with the wind in your hair and nothing but vast space before you is a moment that words struggle to capture.

Your group will stop at several scenic viewpoints for photos and to simply soak it all in. For those who are feeling adventurous, there's an optional Balcony Walk a relatively easy hiking trail that follows the rim of the canyon and offers some of the most dramatic views in all of Oman. It's absolutely worth doing if you have the energy.

As the day winds down, you'll find a comfortable spot to watch the sun descend behind the mountains. The light turns golden, the canyon glows, and everything goes quiet. It's one of those rare travel moments that feels almost cinematic. Enjoy the crisp mountain air and let the beauty of Jebel Shams settle in.

As night falls, your guide will set up camp in a stunning location. Camping equipment is fully provided, including tents, sleeping bags, and all the gear you'll need for a comfortable night under the stars. A delicious traditional Omani dinner is served around the campfire, complete with warmly brewed tea and coffee.

Once the meal is done, look up. Away from city light pollution, the night sky here is absolutely extraordinary. Millions of stars, the Milky Way arching overhead, this stargazing experience alone is worth the entire trip.

Wake up slowly. There's no rush here. Enjoy a relaxed breakfast at camp with freshly brewed tea, coffee, and a hearty morning meal as the sun begins to paint the mountains in soft morning light.

After breakfast, you'll pack up camp and head toward the Omani desert for the second chapter of this adventure. The landscape transforms dramatically as the mountains give way to rolling sand dunes stretching as far as the eye can see.

Your 4×4 will take you off-road, gliding over the desert terrain in a way that feels both thrilling and completely natural. This is where the desert reveals its quieter, more meditative side.

Arriving at the dunes, you'll have time to explore at your own pace. Climb to the top of a sand dune and look out over the rippling landscape. Try your hand at desert photography the light here is exceptional, especially in the morning hours. Or simply sit, breathe, and enjoy the rare gift of complete stillness.

This is what Jebel Shams camping paired with desert exploration feels like an experience that's equal parts adventure and peace.

Before heading back to Muscat, there's an optional lunch stop along the route (not included in the tour cost). The drive back gives you one last chance to watch the Omani scenery pass by a fitting farewell to two extraordinary days.

You'll be dropped off at your hotel or at Muscat airport, refreshed, full of stories, and probably already planning your return.
