2 Days Trip – Misfat Al Abriyeen, Al Hamra & Jabel Shams

Your adventure begins early. Your guide and 4×4 vehicle will pick you up from your hotel in Muscat, and you'll head southwest into the Omani interior. The drive itself is part of the experience, wide desert highways gradually narrowing into winding mountain roads, with the landscape growing wilder and more cinematic as you gain altitude.

Few places in Oman feel as untouched as Misfat Al Abriyeen. Perched on a rocky hillside in the Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, this 400-year-old village looks like it was painted onto the mountain. Stone houses stacked against each other, narrow alleys threading between date palms, and the gentle sound of water moving through ancient falaj irrigation channels it's the kind of place that makes you put your phone down and simply look.

Your guide will walk you through the village, explaining the traditional architecture, the falaj system (a UNESCO-recognised water management network), and the daily rhythms of life that have barely changed in centuries. Bring your camera every corner is a composition.

From Misfat, you'll drive a short distance to Al Hamra, one of Oman's most historically significant old towns. Unlike many sites that have been restored or commercialised, Al Hamra retains a haunting, raw authenticity. The mud-brick homes, some rising three or four storeys, stand in various states of gentle decay, their wooden window frames still carved with intricate geometric patterns.

Walking through Al Hamra's old town feels like archaeology in motion. Your guide will share stories of the families who lived here, the trade routes that once passed through, and the reasons why many of these homes were eventually abandoned. It's melancholy and magnificent in equal measure.

A break at a local restaurant or a roadside picnic gives you a chance to try Omani flatbreads, fresh dates, and locally brewed kahwa (cardamom coffee). Note: lunch is not included in the tour price, but your guide will always know the best spots.

After lunch, you'll begin the ascent to Jabal Shams, "Mountain of the Sun" in Arabic, and Oman's highest peak at over 3,000 metres above sea level. The 4×4 is essential here; the road winds up through sharp switchbacks, with vertiginous drops on one side and sheer rock faces on the other. There are multiple scenic stops on the way up for photographs and to simply absorb the scale of what's around you.

Arriving at the Jabal Shams canyon viewpoints as the sun begins to set is, without exaggeration, one of the finest experiences Oman has to offer. The canyon, often called the Grand Canyon of Oman, drops nearly 1,000 metres to the wadi floor below, and as the light turns golden and then deep red, the walls of rock seem to glow from within.

You'll have time to explore the cliff-edge viewpoints, take photos, and simply stand there in awe.

After sunset, it's time to settle in for the night either in a mountain camp under a sky thick with stars, or in a comfortable guesthouse near Jabal Shams. Dinner is served, the temperature drops pleasantly, and the silence of the mountains wraps around you like a blanket.

There's something deeply satisfying about waking up at altitude. Your morning begins with tea, coffee, and a proper breakfast served as the Hajar Mountains catch the first light of day.

After the walk, you'll have some free time at the canyon. Use it well sit quietly at the edge, breathe the cool mountain air, or take the photographs you couldn't quite get yesterday.

By midday, you'll begin the descent back through the mountains toward Muscat. The return drive includes stops for photos and a rest break. You'll be back in the capital by mid to late afternoon dropped off at your hotel or the airport, depending on your plans.
